Calif. Governor Vetoes Bill Making Some Illegal Immigrants Eligible for Student Aid

California’s governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has vetoed legislation that would have allowed some immigrants who are living in California illegally to be eligible for state student aid.

“While I do not believe that undocumented children should be penalized for the acts of their parents, this bill would penalize students here legally by reducing the financial aid they rely on to allow them to go to college and pursue their dreams,” the governor, a Republican, was quoted as saying in The Sacramento Bee.

California law does allow some immigrants who are in the state illegally to pay cheaper, in-state tuition rates. To be eligible, the students must have attended a California high school for at least three years and graduated.
