Calif. Colleges Get Less Money Than They Sought, but No Cuts
The California Legislature has adopted a budget for the 2001-2 fiscal year that gives public colleges less money than they had hoped for, but spares them the severe belt-tightening planned for other state agencies in response to the recent economic downturn.
In signing the budget into law last month, Gov. Gray Davis, a Democrat, said the plan "puts education first." It appropriates:
* About $3.2-billion for the University of California system, a 4.7-percent or $152-million
