California State University students can win a full year of in-state tuition to any of the system’s 23 campuses for creating the best Web site or 30-second video that argues for “flunking” Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for his record on education.
The competition is being sponsored by the Faculty for Our University’s Future, a political-action committee that is associated with the California Faculty Association, a union of about 23,000 Cal State faculty and staff members. On its Flunk Arnold Web site, the group lists many reasons it believes that the Republican governor has been a “disaster” for the Cal State system. Among other things, the group faults the governor for pressing budgets that increased tuition while cutting money for student aid and for programs that help prepare students for college.
Winners of the competitions for best video and best Web site will be determined by voting. Anyone who registers an e-mail address at the Flunk Arnold Web site can cast a ballot. Only Cal State students may enter the competition, and the full year of tuition will be awarded to the winner in each category. The winning video also will be shown as an advertisement during a broadcast of The Daily Show on Comedy Central.
Entries must be submitted by October 18. Three rounds of voting will occur, and the winners will be announced on October 30, a week before Governor Schwarzenegger faces the voters in a bid for re-election.
A spokeswoman for the governor told the Associated Press that Mr. Schwarzenegger had “held the line” on tuition increases.
