Bush's Choice for U.S. Archivist, Known for Book on Alger Hiss, Irks Some Historians
President Bush's surprise nomination of Allen Weinstein to be the next archivist of the United States has rankled many historians and archivists, who say the White House failed to consult them before making the announcement.
Groups representing those scholars say the nomination, announced quietly this month, violates the spirit of a 1984 law that requires the administration to solicit input from informed interest groups.
