Bush Seeks to Cut Some Student-Aid Programs and to Increase Pell Grants Modestly
In his spending proposal for the Education Department for next year, President Bush proposes abolishing several student-aid programs to pay for a modest increase in the maximum Pell Grant.
The president's plan, unveiled last week as part of a $3.1-trillion federal budget for the 2009 fiscal year, would provide for a $69 increase in the maximum Pell Grant, bringing the top award to $4,800. By 2012, the maximum award would grow to $5,400.
