Bush Picks Texas Researcher to Lead National Cancer Institute

President Bush this month appointed Andrew C. von Eschenbach, a clinical researcher and surgeon at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, to direct the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. von Eschenbach 60, an expert on prostate cancer, is expected to be a strong advocate for using findings from laboratory science to help patients. He also brings a personal perspective to cancer research: He was successfully treated for skin cancer in 1989 and for prostate cancer
