President Bush nominated Diane A. Jones today to serve as the Education Department’s top higher-education official, assistant secretary for postsecondary education. If confirmed by the Senate, Ms. Jones would succeed Sally L. Stroup, who stepped down last summer.
Ms. Jones, currently principal deputy secretary of postsecondary education, joined the Bush administration after serving as Princeton University’s chief Washington lobbyist. Before taking the Princeton job, Ms. Jones was a top aide to the House of Representatives Committee on Science.
Her first post in the Bush administration also dealt with science — as a top official in the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy. Earlier in her career, she was a program officer at the National Science Foundation and an associate professor at the Community College of Baltimore County. —Andrew Mytelka
