Mr. Wainwright, 72, retired as a professor of zoology from Duke University in 1997, after 33 years with the university. At one time, he headed the department.

Current activities

Mr. Wainwright is helping roughly 30 teenagers in Durham, N.C., build their self-esteem -- and earn money -- through SeeSaw Studio, a nonprofit organization that he established in 1998. The students, many of them disadvantaged
