Buffalo State President Will Lead Public-College Association

Washington — Muriel A. Howard, president of the State University of New York College at Buffalo, will become the next leader of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

Ms. Howard, who is expected to take over as president at the public-college group around August 1, will be the first black leader of any of the “Big Six” higher-education associations in Washington.

Ms. Howard has led Buffalo State, an 11,000-student campus, since 1996 and was its first female president. She previously served as vice president for public service and urban affairs at the State University of New York at Buffalo, from which she had earned a master’s degree in education and a doctoral degree of philosophy in educational organization, administration, and policy. —Sara Hebel
