Budget Talks Continue as Fiscal Year Begins

To keep the government running this week, Congress approved a "continuing resolution" that President Clinton was expected to sign last week.

The measure extends the deadline by a week for Republican Congressional leaders and the Clinton administration to try to reach agreement on 11 of the 13 appropriations bills that will finance government operations for the 2001 fiscal year, which began October 1.
