Budget Shortfalls May End Plan to Increase Size of Pell Grants, White House Warns

The White House said last week that because of budget shortfalls in the Pell Grant program, increasing the maximum award for the 2002 fiscal year will be much more difficult than expected.

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives and on the Senate Appropriations Committee approved bills last month that they said would raise the maximum Pell Grant by $250, to $4,000.
