Britain Requires Clearances for Foreign Students
Under a new screening program that went into effect in Britain this month, graduate students in certain disciplines from outside the European Union and a few neighboring countries must obtain a special security clearance before applying for a visa. The government has deemed 41 science, engineering, and technology-related disciplines, such as aerospace engineering, metallurgy, veterinary sciences, and agriculture, to be "sensitive subjects."
