Brandeis Linguistics Chairman Steps Over to Tufts; Dean of Medical School Is Named President of U. of Toronto

DISAPPEARING ACT: For more than a decade, Ray Jackendoff has watched the linguistics program he heads at Brandeis University dissolve.

The number of professors has fallen from six to two, as the university eliminated the doctoral program and then considered phasing out the undergraduate major.

So last month, when Mr. Jackendoff got an offer from Tufts University, he decided that after 34 years at Brandeis, it was time to jump ship. His departure will leave the Brandeis program
