Brain, Mind, and Spirit

To the Editor:

Richard Monastersky's article on spirituality and the brain was interesting, although I have never understood what exactly "spirituality" means — is it just a more nebulous version of religiosity ("Religion on the Brain," The Chronicle, May 26)?

The article referred to "materialist" science, and I think that this term is probably inaccurate. Particle physics, for example, deals with space, fields, and energy, all of which have physical properties, but
