Boston University Paid $6.1-Million to Its Former President, John Silber, in 2005

Boston University paid John R. Silber, its long-serving president and chancellor who retired in 2003, about $6.1-million last year, mostly in deferred compensation, the university announced last week.

Mr. Silber, who remains the university's president emeritus and lives in a university-owned residence, said in a written statement that approximately $3.3-million of the lump sum was earned as a deferred percentage of his annual salary, which averaged $96,000 per year over his 34-year
