Bookstore Head Charged With Stealing $200,000 at Savannah State U.

A former manager of the bookstore at Savannah State University, in Georgia, has been indicted on charges that he embezzled $200,000 from the store, according to an article on the Web site of WTOC, a local television station. The U.S. attorney in Savannah, who is prosecuting the case because the money in question consisted of federal student aid that students had used to purchase books, said that the manager, Charles Jackson III, had been “aided and abetted by others.”

The alleged theft occurred in 2003 and 2004, when Mr. Jackson was an employee of the Follett Higher Education Group. The company ran the bookstore under contract to Savannah State. WTOC reported that no one at the university was commenting on the case. The TV station did not seek comment from Mr. Jackson, who could face a 30-year prison term and a $1-million fine if he is convicted on all charges.
