Board Suspends American U. President

The president of American University, Benjamin Ladner, has been placed on administrative leave during a university investigation of "personal and travel expenses," according to a written statement sent last week from Leslie E. Bains, chairwoman of the university's Board of Trustees, to students and faculty and staff members.

Mr. Ladner is being paid during the leave, which is effective immediately, a university spokeswoman said.

Cornelius M. Kerwin, the provost, will replace Mr.
