I have two comments -- one brief, one not so brief -- about the two articles on black studies in the May 19 issue.
First, Jeff Sharlet ("Taking Black Studies Back to the Streets") repeats the sloppy evaluation and misreading of Toni Morrison's New Yorker essay on Bill Clinton that numerous commentators have made: that Morrison's essay was about Bill Clinton's being a black man, as opposed to the more complicated and nuanced argument that
