Bishops Release a Draft of Guidelines for Roman Catholic Theologians

The National Conference of Catholic Bishops has released eagerly anticipated draft guidelines for Roman Catholic theologians who must seek a mandatum, or approval of their teachings, from the local bishop. Several theologians say the proposed procedures are less onerous than they had feared, but fail to offer enough protection against arbitrary or unfair judgments of their work.
