Birds Do It, Bees Do It, Should Students and Professors Do It?

Ann J. Lane argues that young women, faced with contradictory cultural messages encouraging boldness and deference, are unable really to comprehend the risks they run in engaging in sexual relationships with male professors ("Gender, Power, and Sexuality: First, Do No Harm," The Chronicle Review, May 5). Men, she says, take advantage of this inability when they pursue such relationships, and women suffer.
