Steve Weinberg's engaging "Biography, the Bastard Child of Academe" (The Chronicle Review, May 9) rightly urges that biography be treated with more attention and respect in the academy. However, his welcome appeal strikes me with a sense of déjà vu — it has been repeated since the beginning of professional studies of history and literature — and it is based on a scanty history and narrow definition of life writing.
