John Thompson Jr., the legendary men’s basketball coach who brought a national championship to Georgetown University in 1984, is still among the highest-paid employees on the campus, years after he retired as coach, The New York Times reported today. According to a Georgetown tax filing for 2003-4, the most recent available, Mr. Thompson received total compensation of more than $432,000, second only to the university’s president, even though he works now only as a “consultant for urban affairs” to the president. Georgetown explained the high pay as deferred compensation from Mr. Thompson’s years as a coach.
