Berkeley Grants Tenure to Critic
The University of California at Berkeley has reversed its decision to deny tenure to an assistant professor who was a staunch critic of the university's controversial research deal with a biotechnology company.
Ignacio H. Chapela, an assistant professor of microbial ecology, was denied tenure in 2003 even though two review committees had supported him. Professors in his department had voted 32 to 1 to award him tenure.
