Belizean Bonanza
The Central American nation's expansive marine sanctuaries are creating rich research opportunitiesAs his skiff approaches this uninhabited mangrove island, Lionel Heredia cuts the engines and begins pushing the craft forward, into the shallows, eyes peeled for manatees.
Soon the only sounds that can be heard are the gentle patter of wavelets lapping against the hull and the slow drip of water off Mr. Heredia's wooden pole as he pulls it up from the shallow, muddy sea-grass bed.
