Believing in the Liberal Arts

Like many academics — religious skeptics as well as believers — I am broadly sympathetic to C. John Sommerville's thesis that religion merits an important place in the liberal-arts programs of secular universities ("The Exhaustion of Secularism," The Chronicle Review, June 9). But his thought-provoking case is so often flawed by sloppy thinking that it may give unwitting aid to opponents of his thesis. It would take an essay to substantiate this
