The president of Mississippi Valley State University, who remained at the college despite a no-confidence vote by the faculty in February, announced his resignation today, The Clarion-Ledger, a newspaper in Jackson, Miss., reported.
The president, Lester C. Newman, has been at the helm of the historically black college for almost nine years. He said his resignation was effective July 15. Faculty members had criticized his management style, and he recently announced a reorganization of the institution’s administration. A committee convened to study problems on the campus recommended in April that he be dismissed, and he later drew criticism when two faculty members on that panel lost their jobs. —Audrey Williams June
