Ban on Student Aid to Drug Offenders Remains Intact

The U.S. Education Department is no longer considering softening a ban on student aid for those convicted of possessing or selling illegal drugs.

The original sponsor of the law that instituted the ban -- Rep. Mark Souder, an Indiana Republican -- has urged the department to apply it only to people who break drug laws while in college. But department officials say they do not believe they have the legal authority to make that change without new legislation from Congress.
