If Michigan voters next Tuesday approve a constitutional amendment to ban affirmative action, the University of Michigan’s review of applications for admission might be thrown into confusion, the Michigan Daily reported. If the amendment passed, it would take effect almost immediately, and unless a court put it on hold while the inevitable legal challenges proceeded, the university’s admissions office would have to divide its applications into two groups: those reviewed under the current system, in which race can be a factor in admissions, and those reviewed under the new system, in which race could not be considered at all. University officials refused to disclose their legal or admissions strategies when questioned by the newspaper.
