The University of Tennessee at Knoxville has been ordered to pay $300,000 to a former student who suffered brain damage in a mugging that was said to have been facilitated in part by poor lighting near the campus garage where it took place, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported on Saturday. The $300,000 penalty, which was announced on Friday by a commissioner with the Tennessee Claims Commission, was the largest that state law permits. The university, which argued that the student’s assailant bore the sole responsibility for the vicious attack, said it was considering an appeal. The attacker is currently serving a 16-year sentence in prison.
