Authoritarian Personalities, Yesterday and Today

In saying that the study at the heart of the 1950 The Authoritarian Personality is still relevant today, Alan Wolfe distinguishes too briefly between the normal and the sick — and between respect for order and strength that flows from learned beliefs, on the one hand, and attitudes that reflect deep stresses within the individual's personality, on the other hand ("'The Authoritarian Personality' Revisited," The Chronicle Review, October 7).
