Australia's education minister warned that the University of Newcastle's handling of a plagiarism scandal could jeopardize the country's status as a credible provider of higher education for foreign students.

The minister, Brendan Nelson, urged the university to reopen its investigation into the scandal, saying an earlier inquiry had left important questions unanswered. "Perception and reputation in higher education is absolutely everything," he said.
