Audit Finds Touro College Improperly Awarded $36-Million in Federal Aid

Washington — Touro College gave out more than $36-million in federal aid to more than 4,000 students at nine locations that had not been approved by the U.S. Education Department, according to an audit report by the department’s Office of Inspector General.

The report, dated October 30, recommends that the department require Touro officials to return the improperly awarded money to the federal government and to lenders participating in the federal guaranteed-student-loan program who disbursed loans to the students at those locations.

Touro officials did not agree with the findings that the nine locations were ineligible, the audit said. The private college is based in New York but is also licensed to operate in California, Florida, and Nevada. —Sara Hebel
