Episode 34: New Federal Rules Proposed for For-Profit Colleges

The Education Department is circulating a proposal this week that would tighten regulations on how for-profit institutions administer basic-skills tests and compensate student recruiters. The proposed new rules kick off what could be a busy December for higher-education policy, says Sara Hebel.

Kelly Field, The Chronicle's chief Washington reporter, and Sara Hebel, our politics editor, spend a minute (or so) each week discussing the key higher-education debates and behind-the-scenes maneuvering taking place in the nation's capital. Other Chronicle reporters and special guests will be filling in for Kelly Field while she is on family leave. Look for new episodes every Tuesday.

It is important to note that the proposed incentive compensation and ATB-testing regulations apply to ALL institutions, for-profit, non-profit and public. For example, many independent and non-profit schools that outsource services could be affected by the proposed incentive compensation rules. The Negotiated Rulemaking is not sector-specific (although in a limited number of cases the rules may be).
