Attacks on Free Speech in Academe
To the Editor:
Persecuting academics for espousing unpopular viewpoints is not a new situation ("Terrorist Attacks Put Academic Freedom to the Test," October 5). Look at what we have done to academic freedom and freedom of speech in the last 30 to 40 years. The only thing that has changed is the excuse used to limit intellectual exchange. Today, it is the September 11 attacks and terrorism. In the '50s, it was McCarthyism. In the '20s, it was the Red Menace.
