Athletes to Face Tougher Standard

The National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I Management Council approved a plan in April to increase the number of high-school core courses required for first-year athletes to be eligible for college competition. The minimum would rise to 16 from 14, starting in 2008-9. College presidents who govern the association have called for increasing core courses to 16 or 17 for the past year because research has indicated that doing so would significantly improve athletes' graduation
