The adobelike walls of Antoine Predock's new building for the University of New Mexico's architecture school loom serenely over the gaudy 1960s streetscape of old Route 66 here in Albuquerque. Indeed, the building fits the New Mexico landscape just about perfectly — it's as big, as timeless, and as self-assured as the La Bajada escarpment, the impressive geological feature between here and Santa Fe.
