At a Loss for Words of Wisdom in Seattle

Do you have any advice you’d like to bestow upon a few thousand graduating students at the University of Washington this spring? If you’re free on June 9, the commencement-planning committee there may like to hear from you.

The university, one of the largest in the United States, is without a rock star, politician, author, television personality, or other celebrity of any kind to serve as this year’s commencement speaker, according to The Seattle Times. The original (unidentified) speaker canceled suddenly in March, and the committee of students and staff and faculty members has struggled at the eleventh hour to find a replacement.

It’s not a bad gig: $10,000, travel expenses, and a captive audience of about 35,000 people at Husky Stadium.

Meanwhile, The Chronicle continues to post announcements touting other colleges’ big “gets” for commencement speakers. Perhaps the desperately seeking committee in Seattle would draw inspiration by consulting The Chronicle’s database of speakers. —Erin Strout
