At Slippery Rock U., Philosophy Is Cost-Effective

I am a philosophy professor at Slippery Rock University, and I was of course dismayed to see our department described in "Pennsylvania State System Considers Consolidating Programs Amid Financial Squeeze" (The Chronicle, September 14). There is a difference between reality and appearance. When our state system records graduates in a major, it only counts the graduate's first major. The
