At Muhlenberg College, Jewish Students Outnumber Lutherans

Here’s a surprising fact: Almost a third of the students at Muhlenberg College, a Lutheran institution in Allentown, Pa., are Jewish. This makes Muhlenberg 10th on a list of American colleges with the largest proportion of Jewish students.

Much of the credit, according to today’s Philadelphia Inquirer, goes to Patti Mittleman, director of the college’s chapter of Hillel, the Jewish campus organization that compiled the list. The number of Jewish students at Muhlenberg has tripled in the last two decades. Interestingly, just 6 percent of its student body is Lutheran.

Ms. Mittleman, however, doesn’t take sole credit for the success of the college’s Hillel. Her explanation is this: “Jewish people attract other Jewish people.”
