To the Editor:

Thanks, but no thanks. Thanks for the series of responses to the report of the national Commission on the Future of Higher Education ("The Spellings Report, 'Warts and All,'" The Chronicle Review, September 1). But no thanks for the assumption that some of the respondents seem to share with the commission: that assessment, the centerpiece of the commission's recommendations, is basically about accountability, and hence about resource allocation.
