As 6 Former Players Are Indicted, U. of Toledo Says It Has 'Turned the Page' on Athletics Scandals

A federal grand jury in Detroit returned an indictment today that accuses six former University of Toledo athletes of conspiring with two businessmen to influence the outcomes of college football and basketball games that the businessmen placed bets on, the U.S. attorney’s office in Detroit announced.

Shortly after that announcement, the Ohio institution’s president, Lloyd A. Jacobs, said in a memorandum to the campus that the university took the matter seriously and would continue to cooperate with law-enforcement agencies on the case. But he also stressed that he believed the university had “turned the page on this matter” and now considered it “past history.”

Mr. Jacobs ordered a major restructuring of Toledo’s athletics program two years ago after it was first beset by allegations of point-shaving and other misconduct by athletes. He referred to that effort in his memo today, adding that he could now “say without question that the department’s ethos is strong.”

“Be assured that these allegations do not fit within the university’s values system,” he said. —Charles Huckabee
