Art That Defies Categories
The attempt to classify and compare traditional folk arts and the work of contemporary self-taught, or outsider, artists is a continuing project in the art world. It has assumed more urgency with the increasing popularity of both -- a nice paradox, considering that one clear commonality was once rejection by the arbiters of high culture. Now, in fact, the struggle over terminology can be seen as a sign of elite acceptance, which began with the American modernist discovery
