Art Catalogs: Far From Artful
Maybe somebody should make a T-shirt that says, "My friends saw the art exhibition but all I got was a lousy catalog." The operative word in that epigraph — lousy — doesn't just refer to the resentment at getting a mere souvenir instead of the experience. Even if you did get to see the show, all too often the catalog is lousy. Which is to say: The color pictures are nice, the design is nice, and the book usually smells good, but the writing is, more often than not,
