Arizona State Will Give a Free Ride to Its Neediest Students

Students from families with incomes below $25,000 a year can now attend Arizona State University free. The institution announced today that it would cover the full $13,000 annual cost of room, board, and tuition for first-year students who matriculate in the fall of 2007 for eight consecutive semesters. Over the past three years, the university has more than doubled its financing of need-based grants for students. With the move, Arizona State joins several other public flagship institutions — the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Virginia — as well as a number of elite universities in defraying most costs of its neediest students.
