Leave the corsages, tuxedos, and taffeta at home. Joseph Gow, the new chancellor of the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse, wants people to know that "we're not throwing a prom."
What prompted Mr. Gow's declaration was his decision to keep his inauguration ceremony simple and pay the nondonated costs — just under $8,000 — out of pocket. Five years ago, his predecessor, Douglas N. Hastad, encountered criticism when the university spent $11,000 on his inauguration
