The University of California system has become the latest higher-education institution to join an antisweatshop effort that requires manufacturers of university-licensed apparel to get their supplies from factories meeting certain labor standards, The Argus, a local newspaper, reported today. The effort, known as the designated-suppliers program, was started at the University of Wisconsin at Madison (The Chronicle, January 5 and March 8), and it has since been joined by 27 other colleges and universities, including the University of California’s 10 campuses, according to the group sponsoring the program.
