Antigay Hazing at Vermont Fraternity Prompts $1,000 Fines

Four fraternity members at the University of Vermont have been fined $1,000 each under the state’s strict anti-hazing law for staging a homophobic initiation ritual in March that made pledges wear cowboy outfits and endure a rain of antigay insults based on the recent movie Brokeback Mountain, the Associated Press reported. The four students, who are officers of the campus’s Phi Gamma Delta chapter, have denied the allegations. A local prosecutor said he did not plan to file criminal charges.
