Anti-Sweatshop Sit-In Ends in Arrests at U. of Michigan

A dozen students were arrested late Tuesday at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor after they staged a sit-in in the president’s office and refused to leave at the close of the business day, the Associated Press reported. The sit-in was part of a larger demonstration over what the protesters described as Michigan’s failure to adhere to its stated policies to crack down on companies that use sweatshop labor to manufacture apparel and other products under license from the university. The arrested students were processed and released last night. —Andrew Mytelka
