Anthologies Revisited

Nina Baym complains ("Anthologies Serve a Useful Purpose," Letters to the Editor, May 28) that in my essay, "Why Big Anthologies Make Bad Textbooks" (Opinion, April 16), I propose "pure literary value" as the "only valid criterion."
