Another Plea of Guilty in 2001 Arson at U. of Washington Center

Another defendant has pleaded guilty to charges in connection with the 2001 firebombing that destroyed the University of Washington’s horticulture center. Under a plea bargain, Jennifer Kolar, 33, will be sentenced on January 5 to five to seven years in prison, the Associated Press reported. Additional defendants are expected to plead guilty in that arson, and, following a federal investigation, other self-confessed members of the Earth Liberation Front have already pleaded guilty to conspiring to set a string of fires in five Western states to protest development. The fires caused a total of $20-million in damage but no injuries.

The University of Washington rebuilt the horticulture center, where researchers had studied fast-growing hybrid poplars in hopes of limiting the amount of natural forests that timber companies log.
